After destroying several bridges between LaGrange and Moscow, Confederate cavalry commanded by Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn attacked the 12th Michigan Infantry at Middleburgh on December 22, 1862. Van Dorn was forced to retreat when Union reinforcements under the command of Brig. Gen. Benjamin Grierson arrived to support the 12th Michigan.
