On January 24, 1864 an attack of Confederate forces advancing on the Big Springs and Bear Creek road was repulsed by the 91st Indiana Infantry at Powell’s bridge.

On April 12, the cavalry force of Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest’s force surrounded Fort Pillow on the Mississippi River.
