On April 2-4, 1864 a Union reconnaissance under the command of Brig. Gen. Thomas Wood scouted the valley between Powder Springs and Rogersville to determine the position of Maj. Gen. James Longstreet’s Corps that had moved north into Virginia.

Advancing into Tennessee from Florence, Alabama the Confederate Army of Tennessee (Lieut. Gen. John Bell Hood) created a diversion at Columbia, Tennessee
