The Union Army marched across the Nashville Pike bridge at Overall Creek while advancing to the Stones River battlefield. The bridge was the location of the Provost Guard (9 th Michigan Infantry) for General George Thomas protecting his supply wagons during the battle. The regiment managed to control about one thousand panicked retreating soldiers from the start of the battle and redirected them back to lines protecting the Nashville Pike and the railroad proving vital to the Union efforts.
