In a final thrust to regain a Confederate foot-hold in Tennessee, the Army of Tennessee (Lieut. Gen. John Bell Hood) advanced to the southern outskirts of Nashville where the Union Army of the Cumberland (Maj. Gen. George Thomas) attacked Hood’s line on December 15-16, 1864. In the engagement that followed, the Army of Tennessee was effectively destroyed as a fighting force and retreated to Tupelo, Mississippi where Hood resigned his command.
