On March 24, 1864 Confederate cavalry under Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked the garrison at Union City held by the 7th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (Col. Isaac Hawkins). After several unsuccessful assaults on the garrison, Forrest’s cavalry finally forced a surrender of 481 men, 300 horses, about 500 small arms, supplies and approximately $60,000 in cash.
