Steve Dean Receives Statewide Preservation Award![]() STEVE DEAN RECEIVES STATEWIDE PRESERVATION AWARD The Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association (TCWPA) has awarded Steve Dean of Knoxville, Tennessee, the 2010 Robert “A” Ragland Award for his outstanding work in preserving and interpreting Civil War sites in Tennessee. TCWPA President Jim Danley presented the award at the May 1st Annual Membership meeting in Triune, Tennessee. Danley recognized Steve’s leadership as a founding member and current president of the East Tennessee Civil War Alliance. The Alliance includes representatives of the University of Tennessee, Maryville College, the East Tennessee Historical Society, Knox Heritage and the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable. Through their coordinated efforts, they have documented and promoted Knoxville’s Civil War story for the Tennessee Civil War Trails program and the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The East Tennessee Civil War Alliance is assisting the Legacy Parks Foundation in its ongoing effort to acquire 1000 acres of woodlands including two hill top Civil War forts and a battle site through their Urban Wilderness/Historic Corridor project in South Knoxville. Dean, a veteran documentary film maker and past executive producer of the Heartland Series for WBIR Television, produced a documentary entitled “Holding the High Ground” that explores Civil War resources on the land south of the river and reveals their significance. Steve also produced the Frank H. McClung Museum’s video “Its Memory Alone Remains” as part of the new Battle of Fort Sanders exhibit. The video has received awards of excellence from the East Tennessee Historical Society, the Tennessee Association of Museums and the Southeast Museum Conference. As part of the recognition TCWPA presented a check for $500 to the East Tennessee Civil War Alliance. TCWPA is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Tennessee’s Civil War battlefield sites.
