At the TCWPA Annual meeting in Chattanooga, President Steve McDaniel presented the 2008 and 2009 Robert A. Ragland Awards. The annual award is named in honor of Bob Ragland, a charter member of TCWPA and dedicated preservationist from middle Tennessee. The award recognizes outstanding community leadership in battlefield preservation. TCWPA presented $250.00 checks to each of the recipients’ selected preservation organization.
(AT LEFT) McDaniel congratulates Bobby Davenport and Rick Wood, Trust for Public Lands, for their outstanding work in securing protection of all the new battlefield parcels in the Chattanooga area during the past decade, including those associated with Moccasin Bend and the Wauhatchie battlefield. McDaniel noted, "Their ability to find ways to get things done in the complicated and challenging world of land acquisition and administrative procedures is remarkable." Bobby designated his check to go to the Trust for Public Lands for future battlefield acquisition and Rick divided his donation between the Friends of the Park and the Friends of Moccasin Bend.
(AT RIGHT) Mike Beck, unable to attend last year's annual meeting, receives the 2008 Ragland Award. President McDaniel recognized Mike’s leadership in east Tennessee in purchasing the Longstreet Headquarters, and interpreting and preserving several other east Tennessee sites. An authority on east Tennessee Civil War sites, Mike serves as TCWPA's east Tennessee site specialist and as a state officer with the TN Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Mike's designated his award check to go to the Lakeway Civil War Preservation Association.
