Breaking News 1859: From the Field
From Shiloh
"The ground was strewn with the dead of the enemy and our own, mangled in
every conceivable way... A federal soldier was laying dead, and beside him
a beautiful dog who would suffer no one to approach his dead master."
Captain Latta, 13th Tennessee Infantry, CSA
"The enemy poured such a destructive fire upon our ranks that we were unable to stand it.
Major Doak was killed the first round, having been shot with nine minnie balls.
His horse was killed at the same time..."
Sgt. Smith, 2nd Tennessee, CSA
"The dead lay in grotesque poses, some headless, some disemboweled others
cut half in two. It was a most hideous and revolting sight. The result of
canister fire at close range."
Capt. Andrew Hickenlooper 5th Ohio Light Artillery US on viewing the
Hornets Nest
"The bullets started to rain thick and fast. Little clouds of smoke
appeared, and we heard the cracking noise of timber being splintered by the
bullets. This was my first experience in being shot at, and I was as
scared as the next man. Presently I began to see men on the ground and
soon realized they were hurt. At first I couldn’t’ see their faces. Maybe
I didn’t want to see them. . . . Most of these men on the ground were our
close friends, neighbors, kinfolk."
Lt. William Thompson 6th Mississippi
